Up and coming Victorian rapper Billy Reeves has returned to the fray with a beautiful new track.
Having picked up credits on ABC TV and triple j, Billy Reeves has become renowned for his thoughtful music and production style, enjoying critical success for his last album, Papa Green in 2019.
However, his new effort, where he teams up with Ben Ivories, sees him delivering a heart-on-his-sleeve tribute to his mother. This is a simple, stripped back song led but a gentle groove and bass, with beautiful keys and synthesizers hanging in the background to give the track a child-like, gentle, almost dreamlike state, complimented by the beautiful background vocals the Ben brings to the table.
However, Billy Reeves shows his maturity in his lyrics, with a stare-you-right-in-the-eye vocal delivery. Speaking to his mother, he admits he needs to take the time to stop and appreciate all the amazing things she has done for him, and admitted his behaviour and attitude has been something she may have found difficult to manage. This comes to the forefront when Billy Reeves has a moment of lyrical clarity, where he aims to try and repay her through his success, and that if he doesn't acknowledge her help he may look and wonder "where she's at", which is echoed throughout the chorus.
This is a touching, haunting and beautiful tribute, filled to the brim with maturity and grace. Billy Reeves finds power in simplicity, and even more power in raw emotion and love affirmation. 'Mama' is an absolute banger that will put a smile on your face during these times, and serves as a perfect tribute to the women in our lives who give so much.
